AFT KY1360! - A New Beginning
AFT KY 1360 was languishing. This year was the year to ensure that ourinfrastructure was in good shape.
This is what we accomplished.
- We updated our local chapter's name from Faculty/Staff Alliance to American Federation of Teachers (AFT) KY1360 so that folks can find us on the web fast and we are more aligned with AFT National Standards.
- Updated the membership list for accuracy and preform monthly audits to ensure member list is updated as employees join, retire, or resign.
- We developed an accurate e-mail list.
- We distributed a survey to all members soliciting updated contact infomation and what issues they would like the union to focus on. We analyzed the survey which resulted in three primary goals for thisunion. These are listed below.
- We used the survey to develop a list of personal e-mails rather than use KCTCS e-mail in order to ensure private communication for steward requests or employment issues.
- We worked with AFT National to set up a system (Bill Highway) to pay dues not using payroll deduction. This may become necessary in the future, pending legislation..
- We redesigned the web site!
- We established legal guidelines for legal support for members. We worked with AFT National and our own AFT lawyer. This is posted on our website.
- We wrote a constitution. We could only find a draft copy of our AFT local chapter constitution after 30+ years of being founded and could not verify that it was every officially approved. We also updated the constitution to reflect current union membership, technology, and education trends.
- We advocated for faculty and staff in the Kentucky Lantern (multiple
articles) and through the Urban League. - We established secure e-mails for membership communication and
financial communication. - We are advocating for our members, reestablishing “friendships” with two Kentucky General Assembly Senators
and established new “friendships” with another Kentucky Senator and Kentucky Representative. These four people will be our “eyes and ears” as legislation is purposed and passed in our Kentucky General Assembly. - We have begun the election process for new officers, and we will vote on the new constitution. (The constitution is posted on our website.)
